Welch’s Transport Ltd’s strategy starts to pay off

After several months of robust discussions and negotiations, Cambridge based Welch’s Transport Ltd has won a long term distribution contract with leading, high performance tiling and flooring products manufacturer Ardex UK Limited, based in Haverhill, Suffolk. The contract began in January and Q1 results of the KPI for goods delivered "On Time, Everything In Full" were an impressive 98.8%.

Welch’s will move significant volumes of palletised freight to Ardex customers throughout the UK, predominantly using their prime fleet with back up provided through its membership of the Palletline network. As part of the deal, Welch’s will supply a liveried resource of rigids and artics. In addition, Welch’s has provided a full-time Warehouse Manager, for a period of six months, to help establish a strong platform from which to deliver a high-quality service.

Paul Goldspink, Ardex Operations Director, said of the deal:

“The process of selecting our new transport service provider required careful consideration. Exiting a previous 30 year transport partnership, our requirement brief of meeting our ‘Gold Standard’ service levels both in terms of ‘on time in full’ deliveries and the trend for next day national deliveries was not deemed deliverable by all!

Welch’s was short-listed as a potential replacement due to its location and size of its fleet but most importantly due to its strong reputation as a professional and high quality haulier.

In the end I was confident in choosing Welch’s Transport as I was offered a competitive package and the right kind of management structure and resource to suit our needs perfectly. We anticipate a mutually beneficial and long term business partnership”

Jim Welch, Managing Director added:

“Towards the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010 we implemented a new strategy to shift our operational emphasis more towards our prime fleet and the groupage side of the business.

We’re thrilled to win the Ardex business as it’s not only an important step forward for Welch’s Transport but was won despite opposition from much larger competitors. I’m confident that it is the first of a number of new opportunities which positively support the changes we introduced last year.”
