Welch’s Transport Limited
History Casts Its Spell

Autumnal musings of a Welch’s delivery driver
Welch’s Transport is enjoying its 77th year of existence. I guess if it was a human, it’d be retired, clothed in slippers and bathed in wafts of pipe smoke. 77 years of success through WWII and the worst recession since! Such a grand age is something to be proud of but even this feels rather adolescent compared to the house I’m delivering to:
From what I’m told; “The Wyck is a 16th century country residence, Grade II Listed. It occupies a peaceful, secluded ‘island site’ mentioned in the Domesday Book. The property dates from around the 16th Century with the earliest reference to the house dated at 1579 “

The lanes leading to this stunning place are narrow with a natural arch made by the inter-twining canopy of gnarled trees. I know I can make it through but I have to be careful. The circular, gravel drive, bordered by light posts and newly built kerbing will take some watchful shunting and I really don’t want to damage any of the restoration work that’s clearly going on. Safely parked, all it needs now is for the wood-burning stove to be tail-lifted off and pulled, by pump-truck, across gravel followed by a stretch of cobbles and carefully placed into an adjoining barn. 135kg is heavier than you think, I can tell you.
As the customer’s signature is being captured digitally, to be beamed back to the depot and offer immediate POD details, I find myself wondering what the 16th century house builders of old would have made of such trickery and how bemused they would have been at the lack of horses to pull the blue & cream carriage. No doubt Elizabeth I would have had me burned at the stake!

So, if you’re getting more toil and trouble than you deserve or keep getting “hubble-bubble” reasons for late delivery and things are starting to get on your “Wyck”, why not engage with an honest transport company which embraces 21st Century technology along with the more traditional craft of good customer care.
